Agriculture
Naqaqa Giving Foundation's agriculture programs promote sustainable farming and environmental stewardship in rural Fiji. Its experimental farm teaches Fijians commercial farming techniques and profitable crop cultivation, moving beyond traditional subsistence practices, while donated land and an apiary expand the foundation's agricultural footprint and support local beekeeping. NGF also leases hundreds of acres of untouched rainforest for conservation, protecting the island's rich biodiversity for future generations.
Naqaqa Giving Foundation Farm produces organic fruits and vegetables for sale. This project was begun by NGF volunteer John Anderson in 2007 with the aim of teaching Fijians the values of commercial farming. Most Fijians know how to farm but do not go beyond subsistence farming. This project encourages and increases farming for profit in the local villages. Two indigenous Fijians, Setareki and Mosese, manage the farm and NGF provides them with training. They plant experimental crops and consult with local villagers on proper soil & natural fertilizers for the local area.
NGF Experimental Farm
As an extension of the example set by the Naqaqa Giving Foundation’s Experimental Farm, NGF has donated 196 acres of arable land to villagers without farmland for their personal and unrestricted use. NGF built and maintains extensive road access to this land, on which more than sixty farms have been established. Farmers now produce nine different crops, and more than thirty families get all their produce from the farm. Beyond the dinner table, food is donated to church and community funds and sold on the market for local consumption and export.
Donated Land
Naqaqa Giving Foundation Apiary was established to show villagers the economic & environmental benefits of beekeeping. The apiary has produced several hundred gallons of 100% organic honey. NGF honey has been sold in shops, markets and resorts by Fijians we have trained to harvest, spin and bottle the honey. NGF honey has been used in a local cottage industry to make natural soap. Villagers are also encouraged to use honey in place of sugar to offset the Fijian diabetes epidemic.
